You Need to Upgrade Your PC Now!

You Need to Upgrade Your PC Now!

The sun is setting on an era. On October 14, 2025, Windows 10 will officially reach its end of support. For millions of users worldwide, this marks a significant turning point, prompting questions, concerns, and perhaps a touch of nostalgia for an operating system that has served faithfully for a decade.

So, what exactly does end of support mean, and what should you be doing now to prepare? Let's dive in.

What's Happening on October 14, 2025?

After this date, Microsoft will no longer provide:

  • Free security updates - This is the most critical point. Any new vulnerabilities discovered in Windows 10 after this date will go unpatched, leaving your system increasingly susceptible to malware, viruses, and cyberattacks.
  • Non-security updates - Bug fixes, performance improvements, and general stability updates will cease. Over time, this could lead to a less reliable and potentially slower user experience.
  • Technical assistance - Microsoft's customer service will no longer offer technical support for Windows 10-related issues.

Your Computer Won’t Stop Working

No, your Windows 10 computer won't suddenly brick itself on October 15th. It will continue to function as it always has. However, continuing to use an unsupported operating system, especially one connected to the Internet, carries significant risks. Here are some of the risks of staying on Windows 10:

  • Security vulnerabilities - As mentioned, this is the biggest concern. Cybercriminals actively look for unpatched weaknesses, and an unsupported OS becomes a prime target.
  • Software incompatibility - Over time, newer applications and drivers will likely stop supporting Windows 10, limiting your ability to use the latest software or even updated versions of existing programs.
  • Performance degradation - Without ongoing updates and optimizations, your system might gradually experience performance issues.
  • Compliance issues - For businesses, particularly those handling sensitive data, continuing to use unsupported software can lead to serious compliance violations, audits, and potential legal repercussions.

Your Options Moving Forward

The good news is, you have choices. Here are the primary paths you can take:

  • Upgrade to Windows 11 - This is the most recommended angle to take. If your hardware meets the requirements, upgrading to Windows 11 is simply the most straightforward and recommended solution. Windows 11 offers enhanced security, a refreshed user interface, new features like Copilot, and continued support for years to come.
  • How to check and upgrade - You can usually check for Windows 11 compatibility and initiate the upgrade through Windows Update. Click on Settings > Update and Security > Windows Update. Microsoft also offers a PC Health Check App to assess your system. We can also help evaluate all of the devices on your network to make sure they are ready to go.
  • Purchase a new PC - For older devices that don't meet Windows 11's hardware requirements, a new computer is often the best long-term solution. Modern PCs come with Windows 11 pre-installed and offer significant performance and security improvements.
  • Extended Security Updates Program - For the first time, Microsoft is offering an ESU program for individual consumers (it was previously limited to commercial users). This paid program provides up to three years of critical and important security updates for Windows 10. While it buys you time, it's not a long-term solution and new features or bug fixes are not included.
  • Continue Using Windows 10 - While technically possible, this is strongly discouraged due to the inherent security risks. If you choose this path, you'll need to be extremely vigilant with your online habits, employ robust third-party security solutions, and understand that you're operating at your own risk. One big caveat—many applications are going to stop working or lose features in short order, especially Microsoft’s own Office applications for users who continue to use Windows 10.

You Need to Plan Ahead

With a very short time until the official end of support, now is the time to evaluate your current setup and make a plan. Whether it's upgrading to Windows 11, investing in new hardware, or considering the ESU program, proactive steps will ensure your digital life remains secure and functional in the years to come.

The end of Windows 10 support isn't just a technical deadline; it's an opportunity to modernize, secure, and streamline your computing experience. If you don’t want to be left behind, give the IT professionals at TS3 Technologies a call today at (205) 208-0340.
